Have You Organized a “Take the Stairs Day” Yet?

Are you worrying about hitting your fundraising goal? Never fear, we’re here to help! We’ve come up with a new concept called Take the Stairs Day, and it’s exactly what it sounds like.

The idea is to choose a day or portion of a day (after clearing it with your boss or school first, of course!) during which you ask your colleagues to take the stairs instead of the elevator. For those who take the elevator, a donation is required. Either way you win – you get people stairclimbing or you raise funds through charging for elevator rides!

To make it super easy on you, we’ve created all the print materials you’ll need to get it going: poster to publicize the event, email template to send to your co-workers, label for your donation jar, instructional infographic and even elevator passes! The Fun Theory

I get to work every day by Skytrain and every day I face the same dilemma when I arrive at the bottom of the station stairs: what’s it going to be?

a)      A swift, strategic manoeuver through a horde of people on the escalator;
b)      A butt-busting stair climb to the top before the Skytrain’s doors close; or
c)      An unlikely fantasy whereby Prince Charming arrives to whisk me off on his white horse.

Many of us would do a lot to avoid hiking the steps, including me, but what if taking the stairs was fun?

Volkswagen developed an initiative called “The Fun Theory.” Check out how they used ‘Piano Stairs’ to turn sluggish escalator lovers into happy stair climbers!

We don’t have magical piano keys, so instead we’ve created a different FUNdraising idea that might work for those working in an office or attending school. It’s called Take the Stairs Day.

Here’s how it works:

• Pick a day in early February and get permission from your boss or school to hold the event.
• Once you’ve got it organized, start spreading the word.
• Tell people on that day for a specific time period, e.g. 11 to 1pm, they’ll have to the stairs or pay!
• Collect a small donation (any amount works) from anyone who can’t forgo the elevator J
• Consider selling elevator passes in advance and/or collect donations during the allotted time period.
